Durable Synthetic Carpets

Nylon and polypropylene for busy family homes. Nylon is the toughest carpet, handling high-traffic hallways without showing wear.

Polypropylene resists stains and moisture well. With Newcastle's 650mm of annual rainfall, ground-level dampness is a common issue in properties across Heaton, Jesmond, and Gosforth. Polypropylene handles moisture better than most carpet fibres.

Ideal for rental properties and student homes, where durability and easy maintenance are key.

Wool and Wool-Mix Carpets

Wool offers natural comfort and longevity. The fibres are resilient, bouncing back underfoot and maintaining their appearance for 15+ years in the right conditions.

Wool absorbs and releases moisture, perfect for coastal areas like Whitley Bay and Cullercoats, where humidity sits at 76-84% year-round.

Wool-mix carpets (80% wool, 20% synthetic) add stain resistance while keeping wool's breathability.

Ideal for homes with kids or pets where you want natural comfort, easy cleaning, and quality that lasts.

Polyester Carpets

Affordable carpet with soft texture. Holds colour without fading and resists water-based spills. Practical choice for low-traffic areas such as bedrooms.

Newcastle has over 30,000 flats and maisonettes, with many in student areas like Jesmond.

These properties need affordable bedroom carpets that prioritise comfort over heavy-duty durability — making polyester a great choice.

Ideal for soft, budget-friendly flooring in rental properties and student accommodation.

We also provide rug installation for area rugs and hallway runners.

Our Carpet Fitting Process

Foxglove Flooring fit carpets to last in Newcastle homes.

We take care with every step: protecting your home, checking subfloors, laying carpet, and cleaning up.

Protecting your home

Shoe covers and dust sheets go down before we start. We treat every home with respect.

Choosing the right underlay

Underlay does more than soften your step:

  • Upper Tyneside Flats: High-density acoustic underlay reduces impact noise for downstairs neighbours. Often required in leasehold agreements for converted flats.
  • Coastal homes (Whitley Bay, Cullercoats): Thermal underlay stops drafts from suspended timber floors. Keeps warmth in during cold North Sea winters.

We'll recommend what suits your property.

Checking subfloors

We lift and dispose of your old carpet. Then we check what's underneath.

  • Post-war estates like Whitley Lodge sometimes have "Black Ash" subfloors. This legacy material damages concrete over time. We look for it.
  • We also check for damp bridging in older terraces. If we spot problems, we'll tell you before laying new carpet.

Professional carpet laying

We use professional tools to stretch and secure your carpet correctly.

Steep staircases in Edwardian terraces? We fit stair runners properly. Uneven joists in older properties? We create a flat, tensioned finish. No bumps. No loose edges. No shortcuts.

Clean finish

All offcuts removed. New carpet vacuumed. Furniture back where you want it. We leave your space spotless.

Beige carpeted living room with sectional sofa and fireplace. Built-in shelving and TV on the wall.

Carpet Fitting Cost in Newcastle

Carpet fitting prices depend on your property, the materials you choose, and the condition of your floors.

We provide detailed quotes after measuring your home.

Staircase with striped carpet runner and gray carpet on the steps. White painted risers and side panels.

Factors That Affect The Price

Room size and layout

We price by the square metre. Larger rooms and complex layouts with alcoves or bay windows require more material and fitting time.

Carpet and underlay choice

Budget polypropylene costs less than premium wool. Standard foam underlay is cheaper than rubber or combination options. We'll talk you through what works for your budget.

Property condition

Older properties sometimes need subfloor preparation. If we find uneven floors or dampness during measuring, we'll discuss the fix and cost before starting.

Doors and fittings

Thicker carpet or underlay might mean doors need trimming. We handle this as part of the job.

Stairs

Stair fitting involves more complex work — cutting angles, fitting nosings, working around spindles. Takes longer than flat rooms.

Carpet Fitting Prices

Here's what typically goes into a carpet fitting quote:

  • Carpet fitting: £4 per square metre (labour only)
  • Old carpet removal: £1 per square metre
  • Underlay fitting: £1 per square metre
  • Gripper rods: £1 per strip (depends on room perimeter)
  • Door bars: £20 per door bar
  • Stair carpet: From £80 minimum

Example: 5m x 5m room (25 square metres)

  • Fitting: £100
  • Old carpet removal: £25
  • Underlay: £25
  • Gripper rods: £15-20
  • Door bars: £20-40

Labour costs only — carpet and underlay materials are additional.

Why We Measure First

Tools for drawing: a ruler, a pencil, and a compass.

Every property is different. A Victorian terrace in Heaton might need subfloor work. A modern Quayside flat probably won't.

We need to see the space before recommending materials and pricing accurately.

Professional Carpet Installation vs DIY

We're honest: professional installation costs more upfront but saves money and time long-term.

Why Newcastle Homeowners Choose Professional Fitting

Specialist tools

You can hire a basic knee kicker from Brandon Hire Station for around £15 a day. But large Victorian rooms need power stretchers — industrial tools that cost hundreds to buy. Without proper stretching, carpet ripples within months.

Tyneside Flat challenge

Long, narrow hallways in Tyneside Flats are a nightmare for DIY. Without power stretching, these long runs eventually loosen and create trip hazards. We stretch them drum-tight from end to end.

Accurate cutting

DIYers often order 20% extra carpet to cover mistakes. We cut precisely and plan seams to be invisible.

Time and disposal

Fitting takes a weekend. Then there's the tip:

  • Borrowing a van for Brunswick or North Tyneside recycling centres? You need a specialised permit, applied for weeks in advance.
  • Most local tips have strict volume limits on DIY waste.
  • We handle everything. Commercial waste licenses mean no queuing, no permits, no mess.

We handle the whole job properly so your carpet lasts years, not months.

Why Underlay Matters In Newcastle

Foxglove flooring provides underlay installation  that protects your carpet and handles Newcastle's climate challenges.

Moisture protection

Newcastle has a high water table and humid coastal air.

Suspended timber floors

Victorian terraces have timber joists that need airflow. Cheap foam traps moisture and causes rot. We use wool felt or crumb rubber that breathes while blocking drafts.

Concrete ground floors

Post-war estates have cold concrete that draws up moisture. We use underlay with a Damp Proof Membrane (DPM) to stop rising damp.

Thermal insulation

Draughty period homes lose up to 15% of heat through floorboards. We check Tog ratings — for draughty rooms, we recommend at least 2.5. Pays for itself in heating bills.

Leasehold requirements

Many Tyneside Flat leases require acoustic-rated underlay. We've seen disputes where upstairs neighbours are forced to rip out flooring for using the wrong type. We ensure you're compliant.

Choosing the right underlay

High-density PU foam (10-11mm) — Required for upper Tyneside Flats to meet lease requirements.

Wool felt / Crumb rubber — Breathable. Best for Victorian properties with timber joists.

DPM integrated underlay — Built-in moisture barrier for ground-floor concrete in post-war estates.

Rubber crumb (heavy duty) — Maximum durability for high-traffic areas and stairs.

Entryway with patterned tile floor, carpeted stairs, gray banister, and blue front door.

We stock foam, rubber, felt, and combination underlay options. Our experienced fitters will recommend what suits your property type and budget during the measuring visit.

Choosing the Right Carpet Pile for Your Home

Carpet pile (the loops and tufts that make up the surface) affects how your carpet wears and handles daily life.

Staircase with gray carpet runner, light wood treads and railings. Glass panel and white wall on sides.

Loop pile

Uncut loops create a tough, flat surface. Best for high-traffic hallways and stairs. Hides dirt and footprints well. Handles moisture better than cut pile.

Twist pile

Cut pile with tightly twisted fibres. The most practical choice for busy family homes. Resists crushing from furniture and handles heavy use.

Saxony pile

Plush, cut pile with a luxurious feel. Shows footprints and vacuum marks. Works best in bedrooms and low-traffic areas.

Cut and loop pile

Combines both for textured patterns. Good middle-ground for living rooms where you want durability and style.

Matching pile to your lifestyle

  • Kids or pets? Twist or loop pile handles the wear.
  • Upper flat? Dense twist pile with quality underlay reduces noise transfer between floors.
  • Ground floor or coastal property? Loop pile resists moisture better in damp-prone areas.

We'll recommend the right pile type for your property during the measuring visit.

For detailed comparisons, see our carpet pile types guide.

Carpet Replacement

Most carpets last 10-15 years. Beyond that, replacement makes more sense than cleaning.

Signs you need replacement

  • Permanent stains that won't lift
  • Worn backing and flat areas with no bounce
  • Dampness or mould beneath the carpet
  • Constant cleaning needed to keep it presentable

Our carpet replacement service

We handle the complete job: removing old carpet, disposing of it properly, checking and preparing subfloors, and fitting your new carpet.

If we find dampness during removal, we'll address it before installing new flooring.

Call 01917432853 to discuss your carpet replacement.

Carpet Supply & Fitting FAQs

  • Will you remove my old carpet and dispose of it?

Yes, we will take away your old carpet as part of our service.

Our team will carefully remove your old carpet, underlay, and fixings, then throw them away properly following Newcastle-upon-Tyne rules.

This saves you the trouble of figuring out how to get rid of your old carpet yourself.

  • Can I provide my own carpet for you to fit?

We usually fit carpets that we supply. This helps us make sure your carpet is right for your space and good quality.

When we supply and fit your carpet, you also get a full warranty. This protects your investment if anything goes wrong.

  • Do I need to clear everything out of the room before fitting?

Please remove small items and valuables.

Don't worry about big furniture - we can help move items like beds, sofas, and wardrobes during installation.

Working together makes the carpet fitting go smoothly with less hassle for you.

  • Do I need underlay, or can you fit the carpet without it?

We strongly recommend underlay with all carpet installations. Underlay makes your carpet:

    - Feel softer underfoot

    - Provide better insulation

    - Reduce noise

    - Last up to 40% longer

While we can technically fit carpet without underlay, we don't recommend it as your carpet won't feel as good, look as nice, or last as long. If you already have underlay, we'll check if it needs to be replaced.

  • How long should a carpet last before it needs replacing?

With good care, quality carpets from Foxglove Flooring usually last 5-15 years.

How long they last depends on:

    • What they're made of
    • How dense the carpet fibres are
    • How well they're installed
    • How much the area is walked on

Wool carpets in quiet rooms might last up to 20 years. Synthetic carpets in busy hallways might need replacing after 5-7 years.

Our Newcastle staff can help you pick the right carpet for how long you want it to last.

  • Can carpet be laid over existing flooring?

Sometimes carpet can go on top of hard floors like wood or vinyl if they're flat, clean, and in good shape. But we usually suggest taking out old carpet and underlay first for the best results.

During our free home visit, our fitters will look at your floor and tell you the best way to install your new carpet so it lasts longer.

  • How soon can I walk on my carpet after it's fitted?

You can walk on your new carpet right after we finish installing it. However, we suggest waiting 24 hours before putting heavy furniture back in place.

This gives time for any glue to dry fully and lets the carpet settle properly.

  • Do I need gripper rods, or can you reuse my existing ones?

We can reuse your existing gripper rods only if they're in very good condition - firmly attached to the floor with no rust, damage, or old carpet fibers stuck in them.

However, we usually recommend new gripper rods with new carpet. They help hold your carpet tight and secure. New grippers are especially important if you're changing to a different thickness of carpet. The cost is small compared to the benefits of a properly secured carpet.

  • Can you match the carpet colour to my walls and furniture?

Yes! We can help you find the perfect carpet colour to match your walls and furniture.

Our carpet experts can bring samples to your home so you can see how colours look in your actual lighting.

If you're not sure what colours work well together, we can give you design advice to create a room that looks great.
